Where the Black Eyed Susans Grow

Description

A Kansas soldier returned from the battlefields of WWI shares a special night with a wealthy debutante of dirty old Gotham City. An unlikely crossover of the Superman & Batman families.

This story, from 2004, may be my very favorite I've ever done. And not just because I'm a huge Superman fanboy (which I AM), but more for the writing itself. I wanted to bring out a certain sweetness, wistfulness, and romance - the kind of emotions felt by two people sharing a connection but who are, at their core, just lonely for the ones they truly love. And I really enjoyed evoking the period (the slang, the popular songs, the references to real battles of WWI).

For those playing at home, I've worked out the timeline for this story as it would apply to the original continuity of both Superman and Batman. Supes, as a young man, goes public in 1938 - Bats follows in '39 (making him, by my story, a rather precocious 20 year-old Dark Knight, but, eh, what can you do?).

And, yes, the whole idea for this one came from my realizing that, at some point, canon decreed that both Superman's foster mother and Batman's mom were named "Martha."

Enjoy!

Holy cow, this is fantastic! So very realistically written. I really felt pulled into the story and time period. While I'm by no means an expert of the era, your descriptions and word use immersed me into it. It's rare that a time period piece does that so well, that I have no issues at all imaging the setting. The whole concept behind this is great too. I'd never caught the two Martha connection. I loved this! Excellent work! :D
